Reason 41 – (Song)

A live version of Reason 41 was first released as one of the 2 additional tracks on the B Side of the 12″ single of The Stand released in April 1983. A studio version of Reason 41 was released as a B Side on the 7″ and 12″ of The Deceiver in March 1984

We used to rehearse in a T-Shirt factory underneath some railway arches in Battersea. Reason 41 was written by Dave Sharp during the early days in London. When we asked him what the title meant he said “because there are 40 lines to the song and one for the title Mike Peters Alarm 2000 collection liner notes

Whilst we were touring America, Dave Sharp had become totally immersed in the blues after seeing Stevie Ray Vaughan. It was really affecting the way he played guitar, he would play S.V.R. all day long on the tour-bus stereo and then at night drop blues licks into all our songs. We had some huge rows about it after shows. Eventually when we came to record Reason 41 which we all wanted on the album, Dave insisted on playing it as a slow blues, no matter how hard we tried to convince him to keep it fast. This was the main reason why 41 was left off the album. When we needed to have a couple of tracks for the b-side to The Deceiver single, Dave and Eddie went to Manchester to finish this version of Reason 41 and another outtake from the album sessions, Second Generation – Mike Peters, Alarm 2000 box set sleeve notes

This new recording of Reason 41 is a copy of a version The Alarm recorded at E.M.I. Recording Studios, Manchester Square, London in early 1982. This was a demo session that led to The Alarm being offered a singles recording deal with E.M.I. We actually agreed to accept the deal but, during our drunken celebrations, decided to turn it down in the hope something better would turn up at a later date (it didn’t..). there is a clue to the origin’s of the song’s enigmatic title in the ‘off mic” shouts over the drum fills. The lyrics draw inspiration from “The Little Prince” by Antoine de Saint Exupery which Dave Sharp had read as a youth Mike Peters, Second Generation Album Notes, 1995

Lyrics – Live 1983 version

OK This is a song called Reason 41.
One two three four

Well I used to wonder why that
When it’s black there is no white
And why that when it’s day
There is never any night
I got talking to a soldier and he tried to set things right
He said, If you want peace them you will always have to fight
Hey

I went searching in the desert
Where it just began to rain
And I met up with this drunken bum who said he’d lost his name
He said, I put it in this bottle and it drifted out to sea
I said, there is no water here and he walked away from me

So then I asked for help from a very clever man
He kept looking down at his figures
He was a very busy man
I told him what the problem was
He said, that’s sad. I’d like to help you boy but there is nothing I can add

Guitar

Now my throat was getting dry And I was feeling kinda rough
But I just kept on searching ’till that I’d had enough
I came across a doctor he said, his cure was the best
He diagnosed my troubles, but I didn’t get no rest

One more time

Now I was really kind of puzzled
By the things that had been said
And all the people that I’ve mentioned started spinning round my head
I gave it up for lost and it suddenly was clear
The only reason you are there is ‘cos I’m over here
Hey!

Alternative lyrics ~ Second Generation Vol 1 recording

Reason No.1

Well I used to wonder why that
When it’s black there is no white
And why that when it’s daylight
There is never any night
I got talking to a soldier and he tried to set things right
He said, If you want peace them you will always have to fight
Hey

Reason No.9

I went searching in the desert
Where it just began to rain
And I met up with this drunken bum who said he’d lost his name
He said, I put it in this bottle and it drifted out to sea
I said, there is no water here and he walked away from me

So then I asked for help from a very clever man
He kept looking down at his figures
He was a very busy man
I told him what the problem was
He said, well that’s sad. I’d like to help you boy but there is nothing I can add

Reason No. 24

Now my throat was getting dry And I was feeling kinda rough
But I just kept on searching ’till that I’d had enough
I came across a doctor he said, his cure was the best
He diagnosed my troubles, but I didn’t get no rest

Reason No. 31

Now I was really confused
By the things that had been said
All the people that I’ve met
Started spinning round my head
I gave it up for lost and it suddenly was clear
The only reason you are there is ‘cos I’m over here
Hey!

Keep on searching
