Song Review: The Alarm – “Outlier” – 16th March 2025 by Lesley Aeschliman
On March 16, 2025, The Alarm released the video for “Outlier,” which is a song from the band’s forthcoming album, Transformation. In January 2025, The Alarm released “Chimera” as the first taste of the album, and I liked what I heard. When I saw that another song had been released for the forthcoming album, I knew I needed to listen to it and review it. Musically, “Outlier” is a more intense-sounding track than what I normally expect to hear from The Alarm, but I really like how this gives the song a defiant feel to it. When you listen to the lyrics and pick up on what they’re saying, you realize that this sense of defiance in the musical arrangement makes perfect sense. This song has a musical hook that grabs the listener and doesn’t let go during its runtime. And you can also hear in Mike Peters’ vocal delivery that he truly means the words that he’s singing. That sincerity, combined with the musical arrangement, create a fantastic track. Lyrically, like “Chimera,” this one seems to be strongly influenced by the Richter’s Syndrome that Mike has been battling and the CAR-T therapy that he’s undergone for the condition. He’s making it clear that he’s going to beat the Richter’s Syndrome with the line, “I’m a finisher, I’m still here.” To me, it’s not surprising that his recent health struggles serve as the inspiration for the music he’s recording and releasing, especially considering that the CAR-T therapy he’s been undergoing isn’t commonly being performed at this point. To undergo a procedure that carries such potential risks is going to have an affect on anyone going through it. But with Mike’s history of fighting cancer, it makes perfect sense that he’s going to strike a defiant tone rather than wallowing in despair or self-pity. After hearing both “Chimera” and “Outlier,” I’m getting even more excited for the release of the Transformation album in Summer 2025. This is another track that I believe will be appreciated by The Alarm’s fans, and that it could also potentially appeal to listeners who enjoy listening to harder-sounding rock.

Lyrics ~ Outlier Digital Download single

You’ll find me off centre, a comet off course
Outside of the limits, never outsourced
I’m unpredictable, beyond the data point

I’m an outlier, decider, I’m a finisher
I’m never out thought
Outlier, decider, I’m a finisher
A finisher, I’m still here
Woohoo woohoo
I’m an outlier

From outside to in, I live between the lines
I.m Never out manoeuvred, I’m the face that fits nowhere (nowhere)
My own reality, Is a twisted version of myself

I’m an outlier, decider, I’m a finisher
I’m never out thought
Outlier, decider, I’m a finisher
A finisher, I’m still here
Woohoo woohoo
I’m an outlier

Away from the numbers, that’s where you’ll find me
Away from the number, I’’m Free, I’m Free
Free
I’m Free, I’m the finisher

I’m an outlier, decider, I’m a finisher
Never out thought
Outlier, decider, I’m a finisher
I’m still here

You’ll find me off centre, a comet off course
Never out thought, never outnumbered
I’m an outlier
