Review from the North Wales Weekly News by Sara Taylor
* A Kind of Homecoming *
THE ALARM could have sold out the Arcadia Theatre, Llandudno twice over as an ecstatic home crowd flocked to see them on Monday night. Sceptics sniffed when singer Mike Peters declared that the “lucky few were watching a legend in the making.”But after hitting “God Save Somebody” Mr Peters, if so inclined, could have convinced every air punching rock n’ roller in the place that the Poll Tax is fair. And by “Spirit of 76” they might even have paid it. The Alarm are a professional stadium band with a predictable line in anthem rock. But it wasn’t just slick formats that cut the ice.The home crowd welcomed them back with a shake of nationalism and affection, topped off with a fat dollop of pride Showman Mike Peters gulped down the heady atmosphere and mixing nostalgia with plugs for their new album RAW shook up a spirited cocktail of hits and heartache. Pinking at an acoustic guitar he played Walk For Ever By My Side –a poignant tribute to his sister Sue, who is recovering from a brain hemorrhage. Then to a roar of approval he announced ‘RAW’, due out in a couple of weeks, is being simultaneously released in both Welsh and English, repeating the ‘CHANGE’ album experiment. The new single – title track from the forthcoming album – fitted snugly into their flexible mold combining rock lyrics and softer tones in a hit-making formula: “Let me put my arms around you…burn like fire to the bone”. A tame cover of Neal Young’s “Keep On Rocking In The Free World’ was the only crack in this well-rehearsed set. Home ground support seems guaranteed, but with a new album set for release The Alarm are facing less forgiving critics in a crowded market.As they prophetically sing in “Moments In Time’: “There won’t be any comebacks tomorrow.”
