Review – Leicester Mercury 28th January 1984
With barrels blazing in all 68 guns, The Alarm sounded loud, urgent and angry. Maybe there wasn’t a real emergency but it felt as if the world was coming to a close under this four-man barrage of pop noise. Talking of the holocaust, these boys have their finger on the button, although it did not seem so after their first rather trite single, It now seems 68 guns was just a gour-minute warning of better things to come. The new single Where Were You Hiding When The Storm Broke, was performed live with daunting vigour and is an immensely powerful record. It augers well for the release in three weeks of the debut album, Declaration. This punk anachronism – like the continuing popularity of glam-rockers Slade – is based purely on living up to a fantastic reputation, built by hard work and energy. They play acoustic guitars with electric pick-ups like men possessed and the wild, guttural singing of Mike Peters and Dave Sharp is accentuated with battle-cry backing vocals reminiscent if Tenpole Tudor. Their live sound drums up memories of The Clash circa 1977, a nostalgic reminder of great days and timely too in view of the impending appearance of Joe Strummer and Co here in Leicester in their modern guise. The only exceptions are two Bob Dylan style solo spots. The Alarm came with two support groups, Germany’s Geshlecht-Akt and Glaswegians Kissing bandits. All good guys stick together, you see. Modern soulless synths and pop may never go away, but it is nice to know somebody up there still makes bands like The Alarm. Shell-shocked Leicester will not forget in a hurry – Dan Hopwood
