Hardland – (Song)

Hardland first appeared on the Change album released on 18th September 1989

One day we were rehearsing Hardland and rather than rehearse it the way I had written it on the Dylan tour, we had been messing around with it for days, trying to turn it into an “Alarm” song. In the end I got fed up and drove home and came back with a version that Eddie and I had originally written and demo-taped with the band at the soundcheck in Hamilton, Canada. I stuck it in the tape machine and played it over the P.A. – it sounded great, I got the band to perform it the way it had been played in soundcheck a few months earlier, and that’s the way it stayed right through to the final recording session with Tony Visconti Mike Peters, Alarm 2000 collection liner notes

Lyrics ~ Change album version

Hardland ripped and torn apart
Hard dreams leave me scarred
In the lines of my face
The story of faith
Hardland

I came back
Home to a hardland
Where a man is judged
By the scars on his face
Where that sliding scale still operates
To come home, I had to go away from the
Hardland

I saw a land
Standing at the crossroads
I saw her wrath
Burning in a burned out home
Saw her tears
In rivers running cold
Her tragedy, waiting to explode
In the Hardland

Ripped and torn apart
Hard dreams
Leave me scarred
In the lines of my face
A story of faith
Hardland

I feel afraid
When I think about my children
I feel scared
When I walk down a street at night
Feel sad
When I look on the flag
I feel the anger
Rising in the heart of the
Hardland

Ripped and torn apart
Hard dreams
Leave me scarred
In the lines of my face
A story of faith
Hardland

Wherever I wander across this land
Of my fathers
The valley is ripped and the mountain scarred
Tom apart
A house is ablaze on the hillside
A sign says “This land is not for sale”
Hardland

Ripped and torn apart
Hard dreams
Leave me scarred
In the lines of my face
A story of faith
Hardland
Hardland

The lines on my face
Hardland
Ripped and torn apart
Hard dreams
Leave me scarred
In the lines of my face
A story of faith

Hardland
Hardland
Hardland
Hard dreams
Hardland
Hardland
Hardland
Hardland

Lyrics ~ Hardlands 1988 Change demos version

Oh I was born
Deep in the heartland
Where a man is judged
By the scars on his face
Where that sliding scale still operates
I was born, raised in the way of the

Hardlands
Ripped and torn apart
Hardlands
I’m carrying the scars
Hardlands
Hard, hard, hard, hardlands

I hear a song Land of hope and glory
I see a man
Weeping for what is long gone
See a woman begging on the street
I hear a voice
Where did we go wrong in the

Hardlands
Ripped and torn apart
Hardlands
I’m carrying the scars
Hardlands
Hard, hard, hard, hardlands
I feel afraid

When I think about my children
I feel scared
When I walk down a street at night
Feel sad when I look on the flag
I feel anger
When I think what have been done to my

Hardlands
Ripped and torn apart
Hardlands
I’m carrying the scars
Hardlands
Hard, hard, hard, hardlands

I see a land standing at the crossroads
See a flag burning in a battlefield
See a mother crying for her son
I see a father knocking off the dust of the

Hardlands
Ripped and torn apart
Hardlands
I’m carrying the scars
Hardlands
Hard, hard, hard, hardlands
Hardlands
Hard, hard, hard, hardlands
Hardlands
Ripped and torn apart
Hardlands
I’m carrying the scars
Hardlands

Hard, hard, hard, hardlands
Hard, hard, hard, hardlands
Hard, hard, hard, hardlands
