45 RPM Hoax

Mike Peters created a fake band named The Poppy Fields and released the single “45 RPM” under that band’s name. “45 RPM” was the first single from The Alarm in 13 years. The fake band was composed of teenagers. The idea was to see if a young band playing an old band’s music could reach the singles chart. The hoax was a resounding success, not only getting into the charts (#28), but created world-wide media coverage including a feature on CBS News with Dan Rather. The story was later adapted into the feature film Vinyl.
